Private markets climate risk data. The exposure you hold but haven't been able to measure.

Custom coverage calculates emissions and climate risk for any private company or private market asset from a minimum of three data points. That takes your portfolio to 100% coverage. The methodology is comparable to the one Emmi applies across listed equity and debt.

Coverage across every investment.

Coverage of your company.

Beyond listed markets data thins.

Emissions and climate risk data is deep across listed equity and debt. Coverage falls away beyond that, and anything unlisted is where it thins out most: private companies, private equity and debt, property, and infrastructure.

What data exists comes in various formats that are hard to aggregate into one consolidated view.

So the climate exposure in private companies and assets is hard to quantify, and the decisions and reporting that rely on it are hard to assure. The gap is easier to close than it looks. Emmi closes it with three data points.

Minimum of three data points. Climate risk for any company or asset.

Custom coverage doesn't depend on the underlying company reporting anything.

Give us at least three inputs per asset:

Industry

Location

One financial metric

From those, the models return emissions and full climate risk analysis for that holding. Revenue, total assets or enterprise value all work as the financial input.

Templates supplied during onboarding set out what's needed for each asset type. Emmi works with you to define format and schema, then automates the upload on a go-forward basis.

Full coverage, on a comparable basis.

Custom coverage models private assets on a methodology built to sit with your listed data in one view, not as a separate exercise. The inputs are leaner, because private companies disclose less. The outputs hold together as one portfolio view.

How Emmi’s model works

Models are trained on reported data from public companies

Applied to private assets using financial metrics

Built on a comparable basis to the public universe

What the standard approach does instead

Spend-based industry emission factors convert a financial figure into emissions using a sector average

Every company in a sector receives the same intensity per dollar

No split between Scope 1, 2 and 3

No measure of uncertainty on any single estimate

Emmi's models learn from reported company data rather than sector averages, so an estimate reflects the company's own size and location, not just its industry average.

Every metric your listed investments get.

Private investments return the same core outputs as the rest of the portfolio, not a stripped-back version. The same questions you can answer about a listed holding become answerable about an unlisted one.

Every output is audit-ready and aligned to all major reporting standards, so private holdings go into the same report as the rest of the portfolio.

What we found in the data.

Private equity reached $8.2 trillion in 2023 and can make up as much as 20% of a multi-asset portfolio. Its emissions footprint is around 3 billion tonnes, more than a quarter of the public equity footprint of roughly 11.4 billion tonnes, in an asset class where almost nothing is reported.

Private equity's hidden carbon footprint

3 billion tonnes

and rising

The research also found that the market's reliance on sector-based averages is producing systematic errors in emissions estimates, with consequences for the investment decisions and climate strategies built on them.
